Perhaps this is a morbid tradition I’m starting. This year we saw the passing of GM Vugar Gashimov, GM Dragoljub Ciric, Kurt Meier and Alisher Anarkulov. The last two were included on this list for the strange circumstances that occurred that lead to their deaths. Again there are no real plans to recreate obituaries for these people, I just want to show you some games and help to introduce you to some people’s games you may not have seen before.
GM Vugar Gashimov (July 24, 1986 – January 11, 2014)
GM Vugar Gashimov was one of the most exciting elite players of the modern era. His games with the Benoni brought new life to a system most considered long dead. A nice obituary is available on chessbase for those interested. There is now a super tournament held in his name in Azerbaijan. Here is a game he played against Eric Hansen in the 2011 World Cup:
