Tromso Olympiad Recap: Rd. 2

Finally the moment most of you have been waiting for; the individual upsets! This round saw quite a few of the elite players drawing or losing to much weaker players. I compiled 28 upsets but only selected 10 from that list. The order below is reflective of the rating difference between the two competitors in descending order.

10. IM Urkedal (2500) – GM Ivanchuk (2744) 1-0

The Norweigan managed to topple one of the strongest players in the world.

9. GM Nyback (2591) – GM Carlsen (2877) 1/2-1/2

In the world champions first game of the Olympiad held in Norway he faced off against an opponent that he actually played before a few years ago in the 2008 Olympiad. He lost the game in 2008 and couldn’t manage to win this year which means that Nyback might be one of the few people in the world who have a plus score against Carlsen. Carlsen didn’t really show much in this game, he never had an advantage and was forced to make perpetual in a slightly worse position.
