10 Games from 2013

1. Carlsen – Anand (World Championship Game 5) 1-0

Probably the most important story of the year. By soundly defeating Anand in their match Magnus Carlsen became the 16th (undisputed) world champion. I chose the fifth game because although I don’t believe it was the best game Carlsen played all year I believe the mitigating factors made it the most important win of the year for Carlsen. This game was fairly typical for what has become known as the new era (ushered in by Carlsen and a few others) of chess, where one grinds down their opponents and pokes and prods them in long drawn out endings.

Runner Up:

Carlsen – Karjakin (Tata Steel 2013; A11) 1-0 – An incredible display of Carlsen’s never say draw attitude.
