3. Svidler – Nakamura (European Club Cup) 0-1
Nakamura is another one of the elite GM’s who had a pretty solid year, just recently he won the London Chess Classic ahead of Kramnik, Gelfand and many others. Known as a fantastic blitz player he tends to thrive in the wild positions that we see in this next game. The kings Indian Defense has been a workhorse for Hikaru and this makes him incredibly difficult to beat with black. It’s a dynamic system that many are unwilling to try.
Runner Up:
Nakamura – Kramnik (London Chess Classic; D35) 1-0 – Here we witness a complete breakdown on the part of Kramnik as Nakamura refuses to resign; which ultimately allowed him to win the whole tournament.
