10 Games from 2014

5. David – Vachier-Lagrave (Italian Team Championship; A15) 0-1

I had trouble deciding between this game and his game against Jobava from the Olympiad. I chose this game because of the sheer destructive force that MVL uses to dispatch his 2500 level opponent. MVL does a number on him and shows awesome vision and tactical skullduggery to bring home the full point. Annotations by GM Csaba Balogh from pogonina.com:

6. Gelfand – Rapport (Tata Steel; A52) 0-1

It was difficult for me to narrow down just one Rapport game to use; he’s played many gems this year. I chose this game because of his opponent Gelfand. To defeat a player like Gelfand you must do something special. This game displays Rapport’s optimistic and enterprising opening play. Annotations by GM Alejandro Ramirez for chessbase.com:

Runner Up:

Grischuk – Rodshtein (European Club Cup; A06) 1-0 – Another game that is complete destruction, this should be a reminder to all of you to castle early and often.
